When you treat your mum this Mothers’ Day you will be continuing a tradition, dating back over 400 years.

Four hundred years ago: In the 16th century, families, who normally visited their local village church, were expected to go to their original home, or mother church, on the 4th Sunday of Lent. As one of the few days when people would see their mothers, it soon became a day to celebrate that special relationship.

One hundred years ago: In Victorian times young people in service were given this day off to go and visit their mothers, often gathering posies along the way, or baking breads and cakes to take with them.

In the 21st century, Mothering Sunday is still the day to make your mother feel extra-special, and there are certainly many ways to do this, from making a simple homemade Mothers’ Day card to booking a luxury spa day somewhere special.

Continuing the traditions of old, flowers are still a favourite way of saying thank you to your mum on Mothers’ Day, and with spring blossoming all around, they’re still a perfect choice. Or you could bake her a cake: the subtly spiced Simnel cake we now associate with Easter was originally a Mothers’ Day cake.

But Mothers’ Day isn’t just about giving Mothers’ Day presents, it’s about giving love and time, too.

So, here is Celtic Haven’s perfect recipe for a Mothers’ Day she will remember:

Start the day by bringing her breakfast in bed, maybe setting the tray with a spring flower, a pretty new mug and her favourite paper or magazine to read.

Then whisk her off to the Spa at Celtic Haven in Pembrokeshire for a few hours of pampering and, maybe a swim and time in the hot-tub before her Spa session. There are over 80 blissful treatments to choose from within a wide price range, and, if you can’t decide, the helpful Spa team will provide assistance. Vouchers can also be purchased to present to your Mum on Mothers’ Day for either a treatment you have pre-booked for Mothers’ Day or for her to use at a later date.

Celtic Haven’s March offers include a choice of 3 luxury Spring facials – the divine Elemis Visible Brilliance and Pro-Collagen Quartz Facials are just £55 (normally £75). Your Mum would love one of these! The 3rd facial is Thalgo’s Terre & Mer Organic Facial – the £65 price (normally £70) includes a Thalgo treasure chest with Thalgo products to take home. These facials can be purchased at the preferred March price up to April 3rd and given to your Mum on that day and she can choose to enjoy the luxury of her spa gift throughout April.

Perhaps, you think your Mum would like the Spring Pamper Package for Ladies, which includes a mini-facial, express manicure & pedicure, full use of the leisure facilities, a one course lunch and a free mini polish to take home, all for just £85. This package is also available to purchase through to April 3rd and can be used anytime during April, except Mothers’ Day itself and Easter Sunday,

And what Mothers Day celebrations would be complete without some delicious food [they haven’t cooked themselves!]. So, after her time in the Spa, gather the family for a special Mothers’ Day Sunday lunch in Waves. With early and late afternoon reservations available, Waves offers an excellent choice of appetisers, main courses and desserts to appeal to everyone’s taste and provides a spectacular view of Caldey Island. As a special touch, why not surprise her with a bottle of Prosecco – the delicious Italian sparkling wine – so you can all toast the wonderful woman who is your Mum?

Mothers’ Day is definitely a day to spend time with your mother and the whole family, and a day at Celtic Haven is one everyone will enjoy.

You can also treat Mum to a home away from home experience, by booking an overnight stay in one of their character cottages – just £55pp for a one night stay, free use of all the leisure facilities and Continental breakfast served the morning of departure. This is available Saturday April 2nd or Sunday April 3rd.  Any or all of these options are perfect ways to show your appreciation and love for your Mum.
