Good Trails Paddleboarding: a Pembrokeshire company with a passion for social responsibility15th April 2018
In this edition of the Celtic Haven Resort’s reviews of Pembrokeshire’s unique attractions, we explore the work of Good Trails Paddleboarding, a water sports company who keep social responsibility at the heart of their business.
Whilst many people may not initially think of Pembrokeshire when thinking of paddleboarding, our county’s long sandy beaches, impressive cliffs, coves, groves and estuaries makes the county a great place for a myriad of water sport activities.
And it is for exactly this reason that such a beautiful spot was selected for the paddle boarding school Good Trails Paddleboarding.
Behind this highly popular paddleboard business is the passion for the sea and teaching of couple Alain and Caroline, who started off from the humble beginnings of a mobile paddle board hire business in south Pembrokeshire.
“Good Trails Paddleboarding take a serious approach to delivering socially responsible activities, proactively fighting to support the sustainability of the sea’s resources”
The couple quickly learnt that Saundersfoot is the ideal spot for a great paddle – with the bay protected from most wind direction – and therefore elected to set up on the beautiful strip of beach that is Coppet Hall Beach, from which they run their taster sessions and safaris.
Alain boasts over 25 years of experience across a whole plethora of sea-based adventure activities including surfing, sea-water-fishing and sailing, as well as being heavily involved in a number of local water sports clubs in the area.
Speaking to the couple, it is quite apparent that their love for their work is deep-rooted, with them commenting: “It’s amazing to see how accessible the sport is to people from all ages and backgrounds – we had a 78 year old paddle boarder standing up quicker than his grandchildren in his first session!
“And it is addictive, too! We had several people coming back for more, so we started a SUP social once a week.
“We find that people want to come back because they can enjoy the wonderful location from a different perspective and the conditions are constantly changing because of the sea, so you never know what to expect – this makes it challenging for teaching but much more fun, as well.”
The couple also take a serious approach to delivering socially responsible activities, with Good Trails Paddleboarding taking a proactive approach in fighting for the sustainability of the sea’s resources – from whom they owe their livelihoods.
This summer, £1 for every of their ‘SUP sessions’ will go to supporting Chloe Nunnery, a university student that has been accepted onto the Volunteer Eco Students Abroad Program for a sustainable community development project in Fiji.
Chloe will work in conjunction with the villagers and the village chief in addressing the major issues faced by the village and the local schools such as a lack of fresh running water, dilapidated schools and generally poor infrastructure.
Her activities will also see her take part in an initiative to increase the population of the native sea turtles and to restore the reef to its native state, working under the guidance of a marine biologist to gain a greater understanding of sea turtles and the ecosystems that they inhabit.
Don’t underestimate the romance of the paddleboard, either!
Caroline’s love for the sport derives from her time on the lake in Switzerland, from where she originates, and has spent her last four summers in Pembrokeshire teaching the sport having first met Alain on a paddleboard!
The couple are now married and have a one year old son – proof enough that you should definitely go paddle boarding because you never know just where it might take you!
