The Celtic Haven Spa team give their advice for leading a healthy life

The stresses and strains of everyday life can mean that we don’t always take the opportunity to lead the healthy lifestyle that we all know we should – let the Celtic Haven Spa team help you improve your wellness.

Whilst everybody loves the opportunity to indulge in a spa day and treat themselves to a bit of pampering, maintaining your day-to-day wellness can be just as important to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

With that in mind, Celtic Haven spa therapist team gives you their top tips for maintaining everyday wellness to aid relaxation and general wellbeing!

Get a good night’s sleep!

It may sound obvious but there are so many benefits to having a rested night.  As well as aiding mental performance, your skin, hair and nails can become stronger and it can go a long way to reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and those annoying under eye dark circles.

Achieving a good night’s sleep can be very simple if you keep to the following four steps:

  • Have a set routine. Try and aim to get to bed the same time every night and awaken the same time every morning – avoid that snooze button! We all know the call of ‘just one more episode’ of our favourite show but you won’t thank yourself in the morning.
  • Avoid utilising devices that emit blue light when you do head off to bed. The light emitted from our devices is “short-wavelength-enriched,” meaning it has a higher concentration of blue light than natural lighting and can seriously interfere with the body’s sleep patterns – so make sure you put your phones and tablets out of reach so you won’t be tempted to use them.
  • Go to sleep in a peaceful environment – whether this is simply having a tidy bedroom, comfy bed clothes or clean sheets it can really make you feel relaxed and aid the process of sleep. Do not underestimate the importance of positive sleep hygiene.
  • Have at least seven hours sleep per night. Research into functionality highlights this as the required amount of time for the human body to feel well rested and ready to function at its optimal level.

Eat healthily and stay well hydrated!

A balanced diet is key to good health. This, matched with aiming to drink six to eight glasses of water a day, can have a huge benefit on both the body and the mind – as well as reducing the risk of heart problems and diabetes.

Healthy eating is a great way to boost the body’s immune system to fight infection, too – keep yourself strong by making sure you have at least five pieces of fruit and veg in your meals throughout the day.

Not only do they offer a huge array of nutritional benefits but the sugars in fruit and vegetables are slow-releasing, meaning they can help you maintain good energy levels across the day.

If this is something you find difficult then get creative! “Courgetti” or “Cauliflower rice” are great ways for substituting the carbs in your meal with a delicious, nutrition-packed alternative.

Equally, homemade smoothies and soups can be another innovative way for optimising your fruit and veg intake!

Eat a diverse range of fruit and veg to avoid boredom and the temptation to pick up a chocolate bar or packet of crisps instead.

If drinking eight glasses of water is something that you don’t normally do then bear in mind that a number of studies have indicated that drinking tea can go a long way to maintaining hydration throughout the day, despite the diuretic nature of caffeine.

Find time to exercise

Ideally, you want to be active daily to ensure you encounter all the health benefits this can bring.

Whilst this brings with it the obvious benefits of weight loss, strength and flexibility, exercise can also be massively beneficial for your mental health, thanks to the endorphins that keeping active can produce.

Whether it be taking the dog for a walk along the coastline, attending the gym or trying something different like yoga or Pilates you WILL feel so much better for doing so!

The Celtic Haven Spa’s team advises that you make time to do at least 30 minutes of exercise a day, ensuring you’re well fuelled and hydrated both before and afterward!

If you are a beginner then be sure to take it easy at the beginning, there is nothing worse than doing too much too soon and putting yourself off further exercise. Rome wasn’t built in one day and nor is a good fitness level.

Create a plan and set yourself goals! An ad hoc approach can work for some but setting targets and committing specific windows in which you can exercise can go a huge way to ensuring that you stay motivated.

If you are struggling to find motivation or confidence then looking to find a partner to exercise with could be for you – seek someone with whom you feel confident with and who shares similar fitness goals to yourself!

Mix it up! Boredom can quickly become a factor in people slacking off with their fitness activities. Try new exercises, sign up for classes or go somewhere new and exciting to enjoy exercising – don’t keep a monotony to your regime, variety is the spice of life.

Make sure you allow for opportunities across the day for some ‘me time’

The fast-paced nature of the modern world and the trappings of technology quite often mean that we feel as though we’re at the demand of others 24/7 and just don’t stop.

Having time to yourself is so important and we should look to try and practice it in our busy lives.

This could be anything from taking the time out to put your feet up in front of a good film, taking a long hot bath with some lovely Elemis scented oils or chilling out and burying yourself in a good book – allowing opportunities to just switch off is essential for maintaining your physical and mental wellbeing.
